Frank Nitty


After graduating at the Design Academy Eindhoven Frank spent his time either exploring different fields of art and design or working a day job as a art-director. His work gradually moved into the realms of film and video working on post production and directing. Currently Frank is utilizing his skills in motion graphics and animation to develop his own unique style and fresh approach to art vs advertising.

Tell us about the works that we’re featuring?

My work is a hybrid of photo collage and animation. Most of the stuff I do these days is a reaction to marketing and advertising. Mostly inspired by the beauty and fashion industry.

I try to deform and re-invent the human body and present what is considered beautiful or pretty in a way that is more challenging. I always try to balance on the boundary of the pleasant and the uncomfortable.

How does social media affect your art?

Social media works like a kind of democratic portfolio where an amount of “likes” can get you a certain “validation” which helps people who are otherwise really conservative to get over the line. It’s like a testing ground maybe.

Either way it’s just kind of cool to be able to share things with people which otherwise might never see the light of day.

What are you working on right now?

There are always a variety of things I’m doing. I’m quite pleased with that.

I’m working on social media campaigns with fashion brands, projection shows, projections for musicians, event visuals, music video stuff even corporate animation videos. (But that stuff you will probably never see on social media.) However I enjoy it all.

What does the future hold for your work?

I’m definitely interested in Fashion. I like to collaborate with fashion photographers and creative directors. It’s a hugely creative industry and there are a lot of talented people working in that field who really inspire me to keep trying new things.

I also keep one eye on more advanced technology. Things like 360 video and Virtual Reality. I definitely think I need to do a VR project soon.

Also, I think it might become more important for people with talent to make their voice heard about social issues like the environment.

How do you determine if a work has been a success?

If it’s finished. But basically “art” is never really finished so I guess it’s impossible to know. But if you put a gun to my head I would say; ‘When my client is happy’. In the end I never know if something is good or great.  But if you work for someone it’s a bit easier to finish something off.

Has your work ever gotten you in a dangerous situation?

I would say all the time..? Working as an independent artist isn’t always easy. It’s very uncertain and I actually consider it super unhealthy. Working 10.000 hours in a row on Coffee, that sort of stuff.

As a producer / director I’ve probably done all kinds of dangerous stuff which I wasn’t aware of at the time. You know, fire, water, height, police and all this hoopla.
