Ben Zank was born in the Bronx, New York. At the age of 18, he began taking photographs for fun after he discovered a Pentax ME Super in his grandmother’s attic. His self-portraits aim to stretch the viewer’s imagination and express his feelings when words fail.
Well I kind of just made these images throughout the past year and a half. There’s no story to any of them. I’m too scatter-brained to come up with a coherent series and I’m perfectly okay with that.
Working only with digital technologies means I rarely see my work printed in the flesh which, in truth, can cause a lack of attention to detail sometimes.
It’s given me a megaphone to share my work all these years, and I’m pretty happy that no one has made any noise complaints yet.
I’ve got a moderately large backlog of images I’ve shot in the past two weeks that I’m slowly chipping away at on Photoshop.
I already had a blooming interest in photography, but finding a Pentax ME Super in my grandma’s attic was a prompt kickstart to me taking photos now and not later.
I’d like to put a bit more production into some of my ideas. I don’t want to go all out from the get-go, but making small adjustments like renting a cherry picker and getting permission to clear a street would be a great start.
I really can’t say I’ve had anything negative stick with me except for overhearing someone in college (who was a photographer) call my work stupid behind my back. The jokes on them; they spent 100k on a degree in photography and their only critique for an image they don’t like is calling it ‘stupid’.
Did you hear that song by Kanye West? There was this guy on the track named Paul McCartney. I heard he is going be big now after that collaboration.
